The honest cooling-unit conversation
If the cooling unit has failed, you are choosing between a replacement cooling unit and a new refrigerator. Which one makes sense depends on the age of the rig, what else is aging alongside it, and how long you plan to keep it.
You'll get that arithmetic on the first visit — including the case for doing nothing — rather than a quote for the most expensive path. Some rigs justify a new cooling unit. Some don't, and we'll say so.
We check your model against open recalls
Norcold has issued recalls on absorption refrigerators over the years. We check model and serial as a matter of routine, because a recalled unit is a safety question before it is a repair question — and if yours is covered, that changes what you should be paying for it.
It takes a couple of minutes and it is not something most owners think to ask about.
Why the valley is hard on absorption fridges
An absorption refrigerator has no compressor — it moves heat chemically, and it is rated to an ambient temperature Las Vegas routinely exceeds. That is why a unit that performed adequately somewhere milder can look broken here while being mechanically fine.
A clear rear vent stack matters more in this climate than anywhere else, and it is one of the most common reasons a healthy Norcold underperforms. Vent fan kits, airflow correction and which side of the rig faces the afternoon sun are all real variables, not fussiness.

Common questions
Can it be repaired, or do I need a new refrigerator?
Both happen. Board, element, thermistor and gas-side faults are repairs. A failed cooling unit is a bigger decision, and we'll lay out the options against the age of your rig instead of assuming the answer.
Is it still under warranty?
Appliance warranties run separately from the coach warranty and often outlast it, so it's worth checking even on an older rig. We handle warranty claims →
Can you work on it while I'm at work?
Usually, as long as we can get access to the rig. A good share of our storage-lot and driveway jobs happen with nobody there.
Is a residential fridge a better idea in this climate?
Sometimes — they cool far better in heat. But it depends on your battery bank, inverter and how you camp, and it moves the failure point into the power system. You'll get an assessment, not a pitch. More on absorption vs residential →
